Community Therapeutic Service
The Community Therapeutic Service (CTS) was initiated in 2009 by a psychotherapist, clinical psychologist and a team of volunteer professional therapists in response to the unmet psychological needs of the growing refugee community in Tel Aviv. The majority of the refugee community has fled to Israel after experiencing traumatic, often violent events, in their countries of origin. In addition, for many of the refugees, the journey to Israel was arduous, dangerous and disturbing. These ordeals, together with the enduring experience of being displaced frequently leads to psychological dysfunction and even mental illness. To date, the team has encountered patients presenting issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia, psychosomatic symptoms and anxiety. The causes of these issues include sexual and gender based violence, bereavement, female genital mutilation, violence and torture, and existential angst.
